Tranquillity and Greenery Get Away @ Chemerong Forest Reserve

Gunung Berembun, is always been confused by many hikers that it is located at Cameron Highlands. In fact, there are three Mountains with the name of Gunung Berembun in Malaysia which located at Jelebu, Cameron Highlands and Dungun, Terengganu.
ODA is fortunate enough to be introduced by the Gunung Tahan guide about this mountain during our expedition to Gunung Tahan @ Merapoh on 2012 June. It was still been remembered well that it was a short conversation with the guide on our way out to Kuala Juram.
Guide : Pernah pergi G.Berembun kat Terengganu?
ODA : Tak pernah lagi
Guide : Kena pergi, tempat tu best, air terjun tinggi.
ODA : OK, kami akan cuba.
It is a new mountain to us as we have only visited one East Coast Malaysia Mountain - Gunung Stong before although we've been involved in hiking activity for several years.
Lots of research and phone calls done by trip leader within the few months for trip information as well as gather all the reachable hiking members who we've not seeing each other for years, as it will be something new than previous expedition and magnificent scenery ahead is awaiting.
It is in fact quite a hectic process as time constraint and communication break down some times during the research stage. My appreciation to our trip leader - ODA Ong Phei Ying for the hard works, insist and persistent to enable each of us enjoyed and experienced the different mountain's terrains and geographical formation beside the usual Titiwangsa mountains range we've visited, as well as my appreciation to ODA committees for their helps and assistantship to once again completed and added a new destination to each of us - You gals are awesome !!!!!

Upon reaching Camp Balak after 3 hours of up and up all the time, we're stunned by the tranquillity and the calm, crystal clear river, fish can be seen beneath the stir-less  still water. It is a place we wish to stay longer to experience the natural quiet in the woods, but the "Go" is a must as our targeted destination is still hours to go.
Journey towards G.Berembun peak, is another sensational scenery along the trail to reach the exact highest point. The dry soil, disperse trees, scarcity of strapping tall tree, montane forest formation is something new to us, we are approaching close to G.Berembun Peak and We're definitely at Malaysia East Coast Forest.
Scenery gets even better as journey continue, the supposed just 30 minutes descending from G.Berembun Peak toward Camp Langsir had multiplied by 3. Among the 10 person who takes our time to descend slowly and stop at most of the unique spot, admiring the greenish color of the river, snapping as much photo as we could.
It's definitely worth the whole day long 8 hours hike from park entrance till Camp Langsir - We're situated at Dinosaur World despite there're approximately another 100 over hikers were there too to enjoy this fine piece of earth. The extremely icy cold water is way beyond the expectation upon we dipped ourselves into the river, it didn't stop any of us to taste and feel the coldest of the river. After all, it is a long way to get to this fine land, and it will be a huge regret if every piece of this priceless land didn't be experienced to its fullest.
It is another 6 hours, several time up and down hills from Camp Langsir to Chemerong Watrefall. Finally, the tallest waterfall that been recorded in Malaysia is appearing tall in front of us. The magnificent scenery right in front of our eyes had given us an energy of stillness even though with its gigantic loud water sound, never stopping its flow from upper till the bottom. It is a waterfall that we can static our eyes and remain cataleptic for hours, admiring and applauding for the esoteric beauty of nature.
The 4 days looping around G.Berembun - Camp Langsir - Chemerong Waterfall expedition had given us the optimum satisfaction on tranquillity and greenery forest. The Precipitation in the woods/forest had rejuvenated and recharged each of us to once again strive and endeavor for our life.
Till we meet again,
Each single piece of the land will be remembered well;
and each of the 15 faces will be missed much,
It is always an honor to hike with each of you.

My Trip to Gunung Tahan 2012

Written by Ang Sim Mei
Gunung Tahan the highest in Peninsular Malaysia, 7173Ft’, 2187m. I never ever think I have a chance or I have this brave to step at there. Every time that I spend there with you all to reach there still stick in my mind, feel very enjoy. So amazing.  Night dreaming still can smile but I didn't know how to voice out.
I still remember before this trip, once I free I will open ODA Facebook to see weather have any trip to go after my last trip to Gunung Batu Putih. I miss out the trip to Gunung Nuang.  But lastly I am so happy to get a call from Lau Si, but make me a little so surprise when in conversation, asking 4 or 5 day hiking trip. !!!(“_”)??? Wah, never think go so long hiking trip, out of my mind, but since already set go for hiking trip, I accept this chance, no matter go anywhere, any trip, stay there relax there. After put down the call, I start thinking, did I really talk to Lau Si just now, and on the trip? 5 day? Did ABS go, who eles I can meet this time? Many other member better than me, why call me?  My physical ok ma? Should I call back to reconfirm? Leave approved or not approved how? Many question in my mind.
First, apply leave, OH YES!  My leave approve I am so happy, massage Lau Si told her my leave is approved!!!  With my this happy feeling, I go back told my mom that I want go hiking and so fast my mom agree with a good mood with less asking.”Wau, that is a good start” (^-^)~    I think, and one of my friends will go KK for hiking, so is a good chance for me to follow them go training and exercise.
Later before 2 week I get schedule from ODA, my happiness become more kan chong, cause in whole trip I and the other boy is non-ODA member. Other member name macam kenal kenal sahaja. Open FB checking, as last can know the trip member before hiking. The more scare I feel.  I feel like I still many thing not yet packing. Double checking and double check!!!  (>.<)
The day was coming; we all have to gather at Lau Si house. The week before I go search Lau Si house lastly I found it, but still lost on the way to Lau Si house that day (*@*). When I reach Lau si house, Ah Phang told me to list down the all the thing I bring, Double checking the entire thing again. That time I see all people are busy, I didn’t know what I help I can do, I just stick myself with Bee Suan.Lastly we all finish the preparation; we pack all the backpack into Lau Si car, start our driving trip to Pahang ranger office. The checking process, all the thing need to take out and repack. I feel that time is I terbalik my back also I know what I bring. After check in, we prepare our lunch; all so happy still can eat papaya. After the 4x4, lastly we really have to start our step. Of Cause before the step, sure we have a photo. Thanks to Chok Ping you take very nice picture. (^.^)
Day 1, the ways to Kem Kor have to cross river. We all cross the river and reach safety. The kem site have river of course, we all take a change to take bath.Haha…But night raining can’t stay at outside longer, so fast we sleep a really.
Day 2, Kem Kor to Permatang, Permatang to Kubang, take lunch has to search place to cook. Limited space. After lunch continue to Kubang.  So nice we all reach Kubang early still have a chance to have a high tee, orange juice. Then we take bath, water point is very far. We prepare dinner, porridge so nice. Then we rest, talk talk, prepare our breakfast tomorrow. Lucky we prepare early, that day raining early then tomorrow, and the sign of raining is so scary, mist coming so fast. Talking inside the dome.
Day 3, weak up same time like yesterday time, but the weather like still late maybe because of yesterday raining. But didn’t know because of raining, the muddy trail from Kubang to Belumut look like more muddy. And after we lunch, we continue to Botak. And it started to be very hot. Feel our muddy shoes can be dry a little bit. After the Belumut to Botak, along the way, the habitat started to change, because last time we study in geography or biology I can feel the different like the book said. The way we are getting near, I feel so existed, feel the sun burn. The hotter at the morning site, sure the more cool the night site. After take bath, we dinner so fast. And we took a break walk around together with photo around the Botak. Look at the right higher side and think after tomorrow we are reach peak. Because of our discussion to reach peck tomorrow morning to wake up early, so we will have a nice and relax at Botak for a long time to rest there. This night still the same, raining also. But at night after raining I and Chian Nii come out for toilet, the sky full with star, look shinning and big. Feel so, Wah!!!
Day 4, fill like don’t want wake up. Cold!!! We breakfast, we pack our thing. Start our way to peak with torch light. Wahl!!! Lastly we reach to Pack and we stay a quite long time, Siocknya but cold over there, didn’t feel want take out my jacket and long pant and I hide myself to one side that not so windy and can see the good view there. I feel so cold and freezing until I can’t smile properly. But that moment no longer so enjoy because I don’t think I have a chance again to come more and more time like that with the nice and good friends. Good time always end so fast, we have to say good bye to this place. Pack our heart and backpack, and this time start from Botak to the Kem Kor (@_@).
Along the way back, of course we are not forgotten to pack back our rubbish that we left on day 2 and day 3.Lastly we reach kem site. This night we gather and talk quiet long long time.
Day 5, we back like our 1st day way. Feel like don’t want going back. Don’t know why feel like this way back so long, may be because of yesterday too tired so today walk a little bit slowly. But slow slow also reach de. Actually along the way, this 6 day trip, I still thinking, why I have a chance can go, can join them. Hope I didn’t burden them my attitude not make anybody have hard feeling. I take this change to say “Sorry” to you all if I did anything wrong.
Along this trip, the happiest is, I get a call from you “Lau Si”. Cause if other member calls me to go, I maybe still has hesitation. I feel like I get ensure form you all. I have to thank Bee Suan, because of you, I get to know ODA again. Why I said again, because last time when I am study at TARC, I been looking you all back packing and gather there so I go to college to look after all the society to search this hiking society. Lastly also can’t find, it like mystery in my mind. Now can join you all go hiking to Tahan I more happy ever than others. Again and again I want to thank you all, Thank You ODA, Thank You Lau Si because you all, you color my life, beside my life in study, working, I learn other outdoor spirit and knowledge. ”The chance always is ready to someone that is always ready”. So I still learning and get prepare myself, hopefully I don’t  take too long time in learning. (^-^)~

Day Hike to Gunung Nuang-''Simple pleasures''

With a couple of days left until August trip, which we are pretty much looking forward to, another trip has been put into the list mainly for training purposes.
Besides, bringing Puffy and Picca for vacation into the jungle is always what been wished. These were all good reasons to do this hike.

After such a great hike on last weekend, today's hike was anti-climactic, VERY anticlimactic.
Plan been changed after we realized that Monday is actually a public holiday for certain states.

And it's Monday that has been involved and thus the idea of going for a hike with Dr Kee and Dr Ng arisen as this is indeed, what has been discussed for long  and still yet to make it due to the vary schedule, that someday we able to go for an outing together with their doggies along as well.

And finally we made it!!!
The day followed by a news that Li Chear will be joining along too which has added much colour to this trip.

We decided to go back to Gunung Nuang trail head instead of places where we could easily access with vehicles. Since Dr Kee and Wen Ching have some tasks to take care of in the morning so we departed right after that, and thus we will be going to the river side but probably not beyond that as the day can not fit a journey too long.

Gunung Nuang is very popular in the city, we do expect a crowded trails as it is holiday and many would like to have a leisure hike up this trail.
This is Dr Kee and Brandi gaining the elevation.
Its Brandi's first time outing, exploration into the jungle and yet she has a very good physical strength.
I'm glad that people are getting out and appreciating the wonderful wild areas in the desert. But then what that might bring can be worried . There are already some signs of abuse like graffiti on some rocks and shelf that been built at each resting point.

Adviser asked,: How many times we have been to this trail in the year?''
We indeed have done this hike numerous times this year, but today, we have seen something new.
The trail is well-maintained. And one thing i've discovered here is the area has very good signage along the way up. And many sign boards has been replaced since he last time we were up here.

The dogs are very excited to go further. You never know what you might find.
Brandi is ready to go! She keeps looking back at me as if to say, "Hurry up!!".
I think they looked ahead and saw the steps going uphill. This was the toughest part, though. Once you're past this it's pretty much a breeze.

Brandi explored around a little and decided to wait for Dr Kee. And Dr Kee shout out to her ''not too far ya...'' She will run towards to her owner. How sweet of them!

As we headed up the trail and mercifully it is fully engulfed in shade.
I love the cool temperatures, the lush vegetation and the shade.
The air temperature is moderate but it actually feels very tolerable, even comfortable.
After walking up a seemingly endless sand dune, we get to a little more stable surface.
It's been few times here though, the trails all the way up is reall steep indeed.

Here comes the rest point near Lolo campsite, which was our destination.
The flowing water was icy cold, I carried Brandi crosing the river and i let her down at a point when we almost reach the other side.
She started shivering and i found that her legs wasn't standing!!!
I guess this was her first time with the river-crossing too....
Picca was as usual as how she ws jumping around, rock after rock showing off . She always have fun with the water provided that the water level isn't too deep for her.

The weather was a little upsetting these few days but there wasn't any sign of the rain.
Unfortunately, the rain held off the minute we reached Lolo Camp. Instead of having our fine lunch moment just right beside the river, we were forced to settle down at the .....
Somehow, the rain didn't cause much of displeasure.

Everybody was hungry at the time, so we settled down and prepared for lunch as we have brought along noodles, bevereage and grapes while they have prepared Pau and milo too.
''Cooking in the jungle is ever the first time for us...', said Dr Kee.
Cooking in the jungle is fun ya? Haha.
While we were preparing for meals, some noises from the dogs been heard in just a fleeting moment.
Wonder what has caused the clash, Puffy was a little upset but we believe soon she will be fine as her recovering skill is very good. She has grown up.

While this trails up feels like it is so isolated and wild, although it is just a short distance from civilization.
Fine companionship, which has been the one constant of our adventure today.

We had a very pleasant little outing this holiday, although the rain catches us up. Maybe next time we can stay a while.

And as much as the dogs loves going hiking, I think they'll be glad to get back and get some water.

Gunung Datuk Expedition. On The Move Again!!!!

Weeks after GunungTahan Expedition and it took us a little longer than usual to get physically recovered but the heart has never stop missing the trip, fire is still burning strong, still in desperate to hit another hike. It’s the time again!!

We have spent last weekend on Bukit Kutu, climbing, relaxing, enjoying and preparing ourselves for the coming August trip. Despite of it, a trip to Gunung Datuk was still pretty much anticipated.

How could I ever forget? When a question been thrown to me: What about this mountain, Gunung Datuk? It’s a mountain i always think about, and be grateful for how it found me at certain point of my life time and made something right out of it.

Hiking has indeed given me so much.
Hence able to share some stories of the mountain with friends is always a pleasure to do so.
Although many could not make it at last but I strongly believe there always another chance for them to experience the wonders of the mother nature.

After a short trek into Lubuk Petai Campsite on the first day, we had our quality moment for a refreshing dip in the river.
We changed into comfortable suits. Enthusiasm lacks in nobody which always makes for a wonderful dinner .

Everyone mucks in, cooking, setting up dome and, as the saying goes, many hands make light work...
Following dinner, there were more snacks and fruits for supper!!

We had porridge for dinner – it is amazing how it grows on you.

Jun Yu even amazed that we can actually cooked such delicious meal with only a simple equipments in the middle of jungle.
How, is the question, and if we able to do it without proper and comfort tools and spaces, don't we think that it would be easier when we are back to civilization?
I believe this is a big realization for him and I recalled that for once, same feeling grows in me after my first few trips. Most of the teenagers nowadays lack of the urge to learn some skills in cooking.

This was where I started to realize the importance of knowing how to cook, where I have built up certain common-senses in cooking.
It will never be too late to learn from zero, I was indeed very happy to see some changes in mind of him.

The next day we were up bright and early, packing up , making breakfast and setting ourselves up for the day as we were off on our trek into jungle.

Most of the recent expeditions so far has seen beautiful sunshine with barely a drop of rain. Sometimes we even found its blissfully dry.
Somehow the mourns of the thunder started even before the day lights up. It has clearly shown that we have brought a cloud with us.

At the beginning,  this didn’t cause much displeasure, and the group was enjoying their first soggy trek into the jungle. This trek was not about distance but the challenge of staying upright, and it’s easier said than done!!!!

The team managed to stay dry on their first few minutes trek into the jungle. Rain catches up with them very soon. . Luckily the rain ceased for the morning trek up to peak but the excitement wasn’t over yet!!!!
The pictures tell the stories better than I can, so look on.

And thankfully it no longer foggy everywhere but a clear view shown.

Adviser always say, writing a blog post is something that makes us recall the whole process of each trip, and the review will help us in digesting the trip better, a clearer picture can then be formed.

Albeit with the advancement of the technologies nowadays, besides videos and photos, words are one of the powerful tool to capture ‘the moment’.Living it up, wrtting it down.

When we happily talked about ‘changing new hair style’, I was eager to read one of my post in the years back then.
Memories came flashes back….

For me, GunungDatuk is always the mountain that I miss a lot and I always wish to go back again.
It signifies where I first started hiking, and where a girl with very high egoism who finally see the being taught on the word- humble.

Each time i come back here i peel back an old layer of skin from my footpaths around this place, and recalling many trips to review the changes, realize how blind i once was to what the truer ‘mountain climbing’ is.

I remembered how I used to named each accomplishment as ''Conquering'', and i’d also constructed this false sense of myself that earnestly believed this was the RIGHT feeling for each new attempt. I was totally oblivious to the superficiality that I once had, and never appreciate that we’ve been blessed for a safe trip.

There is one more thing Gunung Datuk always remind me of-Milo.

‘'I had never drink milo since little.’’- A joke that has been made out of good intention. This was also a big slap to me about the ‘never’ thingy.

Milo is not the matter that’s been highlighted, the lesson behind is equally the same to foods such as onion, garlis etc, or the things we do, to every little thing in our life.

Some might think that it’s meaningless for going back to the same mountain repeatedly.
But what I can see was not just the very different stories, but the trails, weather too.

The condition of the trail will no longer be the same too. Sometimes, we may even find a place where used to filled with flowing water has dried up.

If we can feel every single things we surrounded by with our heart, the little differences will teach us some good lessons.
Bit by bit , as for every outcome, there’s a reason to be.

Success is sweet: the sweeter if long delayed and attained through manifold struggles and defeats.

All in all, its a fantastic way to spend a weekend!!!!

2012 June 22nd – 27th: 1st Gunung Tahan Expedition with ODA

It’s been a month return from Gunung Tahan and is time to write feedback. Hehe!!! A pain feels on my foot about 3 weeks and fever about 1 week after Tahan Expedition. Anyway, I felt very happy that finally ODA Gunung Tahan Expedition was completed with everyone return in safe. Congratulations to 11 of us. Gunung Tahan is a highest point in Penisular Malaysia with 2187m and located at Taman Negara national forest. This is my first Tahan trip with 64km within 5 days via Merapoh – Merapoh.
For this Gunung Tahan, many stories and experiences had been shared by Laosi and ODA senior that how tough for this trip? How many foods need to prepare for KT to KT? How cold of the weather? How was their training and preparation before the trip?  And how was their physically and mentality during the trip? In my mind this is the mountain that needs to do a lot of training and a very tough mountain. Question been appear in my mind that don’t know I got chance to join? Since last year, I told myself that I must join no matter what had happened. I must experience it once in my lifetime. This trip should be held on after Chinese New Year but due to the reason of bad weather, the trip postponed to mid of June and I have been chosen to join. Thank you ODA.

Before a week of Tahan trip, trip planning had been sent to our mail and I start to feel nervous and excitement until I sleeplessness on that night. Nervous is because of time is near to Tahan and I am worried about my physical that not strong enough to Tahan. I ask myself that can I success to reach peak? I believe I can do it. Excitement is can enjoy the hiking experience with step by step until peak. Start to imagine I reach peak with cold weather, a sea of clouds, standing in highest point and so many…
However, there was a preparation of checking equipment and do the task assigned on weekend before a week too. I had been assigned to purchase gas, pre fried ikan bilis, pre fried hard tofu and tou gan. The most headache was I don’t know what is the different between the hard tofu and tou gan. Many question been asked to laosi. I have been told that it can buy from Banting Pasar or tofu shop near Maybank there. She also suggested me to ask aunty. Then, I asked Pang, Chian Nii, Bee Suan and failed to ask aunty due to consider of healthy problem that she faced. After asking them, I can’t get what is hard tofu and tou gan also. So that, I decided to find it at Balakong Pasar on Saturday morning since I not go back office on Friday. Early of morning, OPY called me and told me she saw tou gan at Kota Kemuning Pasar but sold out. She explained and gave me a draw on my mind how was the tou gan look like. I tried to find it at Balakong and can’t get it. Finally, task assigned can’t complete on time. Anyway, thanks to OPY for helping me. From this un-success of task assigned, I learnt that every single thing given in the trip planning have the purpose and need seriousness toward everything no matter it is small task. It will affect to everyone because of doing thing lately.

First and second day, most of the trails were ascending or steep climb and need to cross 5 rivers. Luckily, there was nice weather during this 5 days and lead us cross the river with safe. Thanks god... Most of the time Pang and I walked at back. I didn’t walk fast or hard during these two days since I didn’t push myself. I stopped and rest when I felt my body can’t sustain. This is the situation that happened in these 1st and 2nd days. Luckily I still can reach planned camp site on time. I felt happy too that I still can reach on time and have a fun time with everyone. The most scare and worry during day 1 and 2 was across the river. Thanks to Laosi, Pang, Sim Mei for lending me your hand during river crossing. During these 2 days, I was thinking that the trail just starting only, when I can reach peak? In my mind, I found many reasons support me continue to walk even thought feel tough. I think of the questions that have been asked by Laosi. Why you go along this time? What you want from this Tahan trip? The answer was very simple. I am giving chance to experience significant trip, I must perform the best and from this trip, I wish to learn from Laosi, Pang, Pek Hiong, Miing Rueng and Fu Yaw of their way toward perform task, get task done, their attitude and behavior, their positive mindset and strong mentality all the time. I like the way ODA perform the task with effective and efficiency. I told myself I must make a change on myself after this tough trip especially threw away all the bad habits and negative thinking. I believe that it can make quality people after significant trip. Thanks ODA for giving me chance to experience it.

On day 3 to 5, the trails were up and down. I have been force to walk fast. No chance to rest a while even felt tired and drink water. It can be do during take 5 only. Suddenly, I felt that hiking is very difficult compare to work. At this time, I truly understand what is called mountain hiking. I wonder to ODA senior still can speed up themselves and non-stop walking with so many years of doing this hard activity and heavy bagpack. My mentality dropped to the lowest during day 3, I no longer have the power to walk due to very tired of the force and felt hard to move the next step. I promise to myself I must work hard and put effort to my job after this significant trip. I want to be success people in short time. Nothing is impossible if we really want to achieve it. Am I right?
I like the trails which almost reach Camp Botak although we walk under hot sun. The scenery was very nice and I felt that Gunung Tahan is just beside me only. Yeah, yeahJ…I almost achieve my destination and target. I can see everybody is walking when I looked down from up – nice viewing…. When reached Camp Botak, Miing Rueng and Fu Yaw start to set up flysheet immediately although feel tired on their legs. Everybody also keep smiling on their face and doing what they expert to do when reach Camp Site. One thing I can’t forget is the feeling of how cool when bath naked at Camp Botak. This is what laosi advise us must do one time when we at Gunung Tahan. Really unforgettable scenario and luckily I got try it once…
Early morning of day 4 when sky still in dark, we need to ascend to Tahan Peak. This is time we are waiting for so many days. Although it is simple Peak, it very nice feels when see the blue cloudy and view while standing at the highest point. Full of satisfaction and appreciation in my heart during this time since I completed my journey or achieve my goal. I wish to stay long time at here to enjoy the nice scenery with cool weather. After that, we need to descend and it is time to going back home. This is the main reason to motivate me walk fast, so that I can reach home fast.

A very special thanks to ODA adviser, with your support, encourage and advice, finally I completed Tahan trip. Appreciate a lot and your advice will be keeps in my mind forever and forever. You are good example to all of us and your spirit is awesome. Thanks also for preparation of the pre-tahan trip to Tahan trip. Although before trip, you are busy with your work and family members but you still done a good trip planning with good schedule and meal plan. The meal plan for these 5 days was very delicious and yummy. Laosi, will you bring us to Tahan again next year or next next year?

Thanks to Pang too, you are strong people no matter from physical or mentality. You always give me positive energy and encourage when I at lowest point, share your experience and knowledge. Besides that, you are the people who always help everyone when river crossing, heavy loads on bagpack without any complaint. You are play good role during the trips and we must learn from you. For ODA senior - Pek Hiong, Miing Rueng and Fu Yaw, thanks to you all too. The way they perform task and quicklyness of doing things are good example that I should learn from them. Thanks to all of you return to this Tahan trip. You all brought us a lot of fun and laugh. I fully enjoy in this trip and remain good memory in my mind. It is meaningful trip for me and the beauty of Tahan view keep in my mind forever. Finally, thanks to Chian Nii, Bee Suan, OPY, Sim Mei and Chok Ping for lending me your hand, to return carry my bagpack, hike together with me. A very special thanks to Chok Ping for bring DSLR camera and shoot all those pretty photo, it can leave a good memory to us in future.

At last, hopefully this is not my last time to Gunung Tahan. I will join for 2nd times if got chance. I miss this mountain very much. Experiences different mountains have different feeling. Completion of G7 occurs after this trip. Let create our own miracle and change yourself – nothing is impossible, insist yourself until end. Let meet again in next trip. Have a nice day J J J
